Canned Dog Food Recall

A recall has been issued for several brands of canned dog food, after pentobarbital (a drug used to euthanize animals) was found in cans of dog food brands produced by the J.M. Smucker Company, including: Gravy Train dog food.

Consuming high levels of pentobarbital can cause coma and death. For now, the good news is that only low levels of the drug pentobarbital were detected in cans of Gravy Train dog food produced by the J.M. Smucker Company, according to a statement released by the FDA on Friday, February 15th, 2018.

The J.M. Smucker Company has initiated a voluntary recall of specific shipments of:

  • Gravy Train Canned Dog Food

  • Kibbles ‘N Bits Canned Dog Food

  • Ol’ Roy Canned Dog Food

  • Skippy Canned Dog Food

If you have any of these brands in your home, stop using them and return them to the store where they were purchased  for a full refund.

According to the FDA pentobarbital is commonly used as a sedative, anesthetic or even to euthanize animals in larger doses. How this eneded up in dog food is not yet clear, but the J.M. Smucker Company is blaming the error on “a single supplier” that provides ingredients fort it’s canned dog food.

Symptoms of pentobarbital ingestion include:

  • drowsiness,
  • lethargy,
  • dizziness,
  • excitement,
  • loss of balance,
  • nausea,
  • eyes moving back and forth in a jerky manner(nystagmus)
  • inability to stand.

The FDA has thus far indic ated that the low levels found win teh Gravy Train samples were unlikely to pose a health risk to pets at this time. However, any pentobarbital in pet food is a violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

Simply put, pentobarbital should not be in pet food. If you have any of the above brands of dog food please return it immediately!
