November is pet diabetes awareness month. Know the symptoms of this dangerous disease!

Diabetes is increasing in humans, as well as in cats and dogs, in the United States. This silent disease can be fatal if left untreated. But when caught early and treated properly by our Veterinarians, your diabetic cat or dog can still live a long, happy and normal life!

The symptoms of diabetes in cats and dogs can include:

  • Drinking excessive water (or no water)
  • Frequent or excessive urination
  • Diminished activity
  • Not eating for 12 hours or more
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Depression
  • Weakness
  • Dehydration
  • Ketone breath odor (smells like nail-polish remover or fruit)

Failure to treat diabetes in cats and dogs can lead to:

  • cataracts (clouding of the lens of the eye)
  • nerve disease
  • hardening of the arteries
  • kidney disease
  • retina disease
  • bacteria infectrions
  • gum disease
  • urinary tract infections
  • skin disorders
  • other infections
  • ketoacidosis
  • death
