Vets Explain Dog Shots (Vaccinations)

How Dog Vaccine Shots Work -

Dog vaccines, or dog shots, work by activating your dog’s immune system – getting it “prepared” to fight diseases to which they may be exposed at some point in the future. Vaccine shots trigger your dog’s antibodies, which are special cells that will jump into action and destroy bacteria or viruses that cause disease when they enter the dog’s body.

The optimal time to start a dog’s vaccinations is when they are 7 to 8 weeks old. The first set of shots is given in a series followed by semi-annual, annual, or triennial booster shots.

What Vaccination Shots Should My Dog Get?

Our experienced veterinarian’s will consider your dog’s age, overall health, degree of contact with other pets & wildlife, and risk of exposure to diseases. Then we will customize an immunization program specifically designed for your dog, to ensure maximum protection from illness &n disease throughout their lifetime.

What Are the Risks of Vaccinating My Dog?

Most dogs typically respond very well to vaccinations. The most common reactions to canine immunizations are mild and short-term – and may include slight lethargy or suppressed appetite usually lasting only a day or less. More serious reactions to vaccines are very rare. And while any type of medicine has its risks, the risk should be weighed against the great benefit of safeguarding your beloved Best Friend from a wide variety of serious – and even fatal – illnesses.
