Manhattan Beach Veterinarian – Dog & Cat Microchips

What Is a Pet Microchip? Hawthorne Veterinarians

pet microchip manhattan beachA microchip is a tiny device that can be injected under your pet’s skin to provide identification in the event your pet is lost. Should your micro-chipped dog or cat ever become lost and taken to a veterinarian or shelter, your dog or cat will be “scanned” for a microchip which reveals its unique I.D. number. The pet recovery service is then contacted to match the chip’s I.D. number with the pet’s owner. The owner is then immediately notified, using the contact information that is on file with the cat or dog’s microchip records.

How does a Veterinarian Microchip a Cat or Dog? Torrance, Hawthorne Veterinarians

Dog and cat microchipping is a quick and easy process. It takes just a few seconds, and is very similar to a vaccination (shot). The microchip is very tiny – about the size of a single grain of rice. Our veterinary staff will inject the tiny microchip beneath the skin at the area between your pet’s shoulder blades. The needle leaves only a very small opening with a small scab that covers it, and no anesthetic is necessary.

How long does a pet Microchip last? Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Hermosa Beach, Hawthorne Veterinarians

We use Home Again microchips, which are permanent I.D. that should last the entire lifetime of your cat or dog. The microchip itself is simply “read” by a scanner – it does not have a battery or any energy source – so it does not “run out”.

Home Again microchips are the only dog & cat microchipping products currently available that are “anti-migration”. This technology ensures that the microchip will always stay in place between your cat or dog’s shoulder blades – so it can always be located and scanned – should they become lost.

My pet has a collar, do I need a microchip?Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, Redondo, Hawthorne Veterinarians

More than 10 million pets are lost every year. In fact, one in every three pets will get lost! Sadly, 90% of those without identification will never find their way home. Collars can come off, get lost or even be removed by the pet or a person. But a microchip can not be lost or removed! A microchip stays with your pet throughout its entire lifetime – ensuring that you will be reunited with your pet if the lost cat or dog is taken to a veterinarian or shelter.
